Preventative maintenance is a must when it comes to preparing for a long winter of driving in ice, snow, and every other type of “Maryland weather.” A little bit of maintenance goes a long way, so here are our best tips for getting your car ready for the road and all of the winter weather on top of it.

Use Winter Tires

If you drive a great deal during the winter, you should consider using winter tires on your car. They can improve your traction and make getting to work a little bit less stressful. If you are not going to be swapping out your tires for the winter, you should check to make sure there is enough tread on all of them. Deeper grooves are best for driving in snow, so worn-out tires should be taken care of as quickly as possible.

Check Your Windshield Wipers

Windshield wiper blades are good for about one year before they start to become ineffective. If you can’t remember the last time that yours were changed, it’s a sign that you should put a new pair on. If you don’t change them before winter weather sets in, they could do an ineffective job of clearing off your windshield and get you in a dangerous situation.

Check Your Battery

Cold weather puts extra stress on car batteries, and the last thing that anyone wants is to be stuck in a cold parking lot with a dead battery! Swing by Auto Stop and have your battery checked. If you do need a new battery, replace it now! You don’t want to leave whether or not your car will start to chance.

Check Your Antifreeze

Our last preventative maintenance tip is checking your antifreeze. If you have already maintained your car properly throughout the year, there’s a good chance you don’t need to worry about your antifreeze. If you aren’t sure of the last time that it was checked or serviced, have your antifreeze flushed and filled with the appropriate engine coolant. If you live in a frigid area, it’s worth upgrading to a higher-end coolant designed for low temperatures.
