Winter Automotive Safety Tips from Your Baltimore Mechanic

Give your car a checkup

Before winter truly sets in, you’ll want to have your Baltimore mechanic look over a number of your vehicle’s systems and components to ensure that they are in good working order. These include:

  • Brakes
  • Wiring
  • Batter
  • Tires
  • Antifreeze
  • Filters
  • Spark plugs
  • Ignition

Be prepared

Emergencies seem to happen a lot more often in the wintertime so being properly prepared can go a long way. Put together an emergency preparedness kit that you can keep in the car throughout the winter. Your kit should include blankets, a fully inflated spare tire and all installation tools, first aid kit, flashlight with batteries, flares or reflective triangles, a tool kit, windshield cleaner, matches, an ice scraper, scissors and string, a bag of salt or cat litter for traction, jumper cables, and non-perishable food such as energy bars.

Check the weather before you leave

Always be sure to keep an eye on the forecast before you head out and if a major storm is coming, try to rearrange your schedule to avoid driving in it. Many people like to warm up their car before driving and if you do this, be sure never to do so while in an enclosed space such as a garage (even if you leave the garage door open!) or else you will run the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning.
