Why are Oil Changes So Important?

oil changes

Regular oil changes are one of the most important parts of your car maintenance.

Oil changes are probably the most frequent routine maintenance you’ll perform on your car. It is relatively inexpensive and you probably don’t think too much of it. But why are regular oil changes so important? And what would happen if you stopped getting them? Today we’re going to take a look at the importance of oil in your vehicle engine.

Oil is the Life Blood of Your Engine

In modern internal combustion engines, engine oil provides three important functions. First, it keeps all the components working smoothly together. Second, engine oil helps draw heat away from the combustion chamber, where there are thousands of controlled detonations happening every minute. Finally, oil prevents the build up of carbon and varnishes in the engine.

Oil Changes and Intervals

It used to be the case that the engine oil had to be changed every 500 miles – full-service gas stations would change the oil for you when you would go to fill up your tank. Nowadays, most people are familiar with the three month or 3000-mile interval that dominates today. If you’re not sure which interval is more important, usually the mileage interval is the way to go. Also on the market today are specialty and synthetic oils that do not have to be changed until 15,000 or even up to 35,000 miles! How and where you drive will influence how often you need to get your oil changed. Heat, hauling a trailer, and driving in a dusty or sandy part of the country may require that you get oil changes more frequently.

What Happens if I Don’t Have the Oil Changed?

Those little inexpensive oil changes keep your car running smoothly and ensure its longevity. Not getting the oil changed will seriously affect your car’s engine. The cooler parts of the engine, like the crankcase and the areas around camshafts and valves, will start getting gunk buildup. This leads to sludge coming out of the old oil and may require a complete engine cleaning. Worse yet, the pistons of your engine could seize, or the camshafts could get damaged. These repairs are very pricey and could be avoided simply by getting regular oil changes.
