Brake pads wear out, and in an urban area like Baltimore, your brakes tend to wear out a lot quicker. This is because in city traffic you’re frequently using your brakes. This alone tells you that you’ll need to get your brakes replaced more frequently, however there’s no way to know for sure how often you need to replace your brakes. But, you can look for signs that your brakes need to be replaced.
Signs Your Brakes Need to Be Changed
- Sounds – If the brake pads have worn down significantly, you’ll probably hear a squeaking or grinding sound when you apply the brakes. If this happens on a consistent basis, it is a sure sign that they need to be replaced. In some cars, this sound is caused by a sensor which is designed to trigger when the pads need to be replaced.
- Feeling of the pedal – If you feel the brake pedal pulsating when you apply the brakes, this could mean that the brake pads are worn down. You might also notice that the distance it takes you to stop is longer, and that the pedal depresses further, closer to the floor.
- Brake warning light – The brake warning light lets you know if there’s a problem with the brake system or if you’re low on brake fluid. If it comes on, you should get your brakes checked out. Note that this light is different from the emergency brake light.
Even if these signs aren’t apparent, it’s a good idea to get your brakes checked out when you take your car in to the shop for an oil change or tire rotation, just to be safe.
