What Happens When Your Radiator Fails

Make sure your car’s radiator is in good shop so you can avoid costly repairs.

Your car’s radiator is an important component of your vehicle. Essentially, it’s in charge of cooling your car’s internal combustion engine. This is important because if your engine overheats, it can cause a lot of problems. If your radiator fails, there can be a lot of issues that can arise, so you should always make sure it’s in good condition. Here are some things that can happen if your radiator stops working properly.

Thermostat Troubles

The thermostat in your car is located at the end of one of your radiator hoses. Its job is to let water in via the cooling system when the vehicle’s engine gets to the proper temperature. If your radiator stops working, your thermostat will experience a lot more pressure than it’s used to. This can cause your thermostat to stop working and lead to your engine overheating. This is because your thermostat will be stuck in one position and unable to do its job the right way.

Water Pump Worries

Your water pump is the mechanism used to move coolant through your car’s cooling system. It does this with a piece called an impeller, which helps move the coolant through rotation. Many times, this piece is made of plastic, making it susceptible to damage from any broken-off radiator parts. In addition, if a radiator stops working, it’ll stop cooling the fluid. The hot fluid could also damage the water pump’s impeller.

Heater Core Hiccups

Your car’s heater core works in a very similar way to your radiator. Specifically, like your radiator, your heater core is made of a collection of tubes. If your radiator pipes start to break, then they could clog your heater core. Also, if your engine overheats as a result of your radiator failing, the increased temperatures and pressure can cause havoc for your heating core.
