What Are The Different Types of Car Fluids?

When you think of car fluids, your first thought is probably oil, which is definitely an important one to know. However, there are lots of other fluids that are just as important in keeping your car running smoothly.

Motor Oil

Motor oil keeps all of the moving parts in your engine lubricated. This keeps them from wearing down too fast, and reduces the amount of friction in the engine, which keeps it from overheating. It also blocks oxygen from getting to the metal parts, which prevents them from rusting. Finally, it traps unwanted dirt and particles in the oil filter.

Transmission Fluid

Transmission fluid performs many of the same tasks that oil does, such as keeping the transmission lubricated and cool. Transmission fluid is pressurized, which generates hydraulic power that the transmission uses to shift gears.

Antifreeze

Antifreeze is added to the water in your radiator to prevent it from freezing in the winter and boiling in the summer (even though the name doesn’t reflect that). It also lubricates the water pump and fights corrosion.

Washer Fluid

More than just soap, washer fluid includes chemicals like methanol that can break down tough grunge on windshields. There are also non-toxic washer fluid options available.

Brake Fluid

Brake fluid is pressurized to create pressure which activates the brakes, making it similar to transmission fluid.

Power Steering Fluid

Power steering fluid lubricates the steering gear. Like transmission fluid and brake fluid, power steering fluid is pressurized, which generates a force that allows you to turn the wheels.
