Things Your Noisy Car Might Be Trying to Tell You: Part 1

Your noisy car might be trying to tell you something, whether or not you realize it.

What’s that sound? Your noisy car might be trying to tell you something, whether or not you realize it. Noises that don’t belong in your car can seem like they aren’t a problem, but they are often indicators that a bigger problem is lying underneath the hood of your car.

A Slapping Sound

A noisy car that makes a slapping sound as you speed up is a sure sign that one of your tires is dying. The slapping sound happens as the tire tread separates from the remainder of the tire. When the tread leaves the tire, it can spell trouble for your entire vehicle, including damage to the body. The moment that you hear your noisy car make a slapping sound, you should stop driving as quickly as possible.

A High-Pitched Squeal

Does your noisy car sound more like a farmyard animal than a vehicle? The problem might be your car’s accessory belt. The accessory belt is responsible for turning lots of devices inside of your car including the power steering, alternator, and water pump. If your accessory belt is breaking down, it’s a sign that soon your noisy car is going to be a dead car. If the squealing noise only occurs when you are pressing on the brakes, your brake pads are wearing down. The metal in the brake pads is being exposed, which is the source of the noise.

A Grinding on Turns

Sometimes a grinding sound simply means that there is a rock or small pebble in the brake pad. If the grinding sound only happens when you are making a tight turn, it’s an indicator that the constant velocity joint in your vehicle is not properly working. Did your brakes used to make a squealing sound and now the noise has changed to grinding? This is an urgent sign that you are in need of a trip to the mechanic! The metal plate that makes up your brake pad is now totally in contact with your brakes. This will wear down your brakes and make them ineffective, which is a very dangerous thing!
