It’s hard to believe, but after a long winter spring is almost here in Baltimore. When you do your spring cleaning, don’t forget to do some spring cleaning and maintenance for your vehicle as well. Keep your car running well with these spring car maintenance tips.
Clean
Clean out the junk and clutter from your car that you may have accumulated over the winter, especially if you’ve left any heavy objects in the trunk like gifts that never got returned. Clean the outside and undercarriage of your car too in order to remove the salt that’s sure to have accumulated there over the winter.
Check Fluids
Check your vehicle’s fluids, and top off if necessary. While we’re on the subject of fluids, check on your windshield wipers. If they’re showing their age, consider replacing them to better deal with spring showers.
Air Conditioning
Check and see if your air conditioning is still working. If it’s not, now would be a good time to get it fixed before the real warm weather arrives.
Tires
Tire pressure changes a lot during the winter due to the heating up caused by the tires’ friction against the road, followed by the cooling down when the vehicle is not in use and subject to freezing temperatures. Check your tire pressure and adjust it to the level recommended by the manufacturer if necessary. This will improve your gas mileage and performance.
Battery
Car batteries often suffer from a build up of corrosion in the winter. Check the terminals for a white crusty substance. If you find it, clean with a damp rag soaking in water and baking soda, and use a toothbrush to scrape off the tough stuff. Make sure to wear eye protection. To prevent corrosion on the battery terminals, coat them with a non-conducting protective grease, and then spray with a clear sealer.
