Signs You Need to Replace Your Car’s Timing Belt in Baltimore

A crucial element of proper auto care is keeping tabs on the state of your car’s timing belt. In case you don’t know, the timing belt synchronizes the rotation of the crankshaft and the camshaft so that the engine’s valves open and close at the proper times during each cylinder’s intake and exhaust strokes. When it’s time to replace your timing belt your car may begin driving erratically. Make sure to check your timing belt looking for signs of wear and tear.timing belt

If you notice that when your car hits around 2000-4000 RPMs that your engine starts behaving strangely, check your belt for slippage or missing teeth.

It’s usually recommended to change your timing belt at minimum every 60,000 miles but some vehicles can go as long as 110,000 miles before needing a new belt. Consult your car’s ownership manual or your manufacturer’s website for specifications pertinent to your make and model.

A timing belt is a finely tuned piece of equipment which must stay in perfect alignment while ensuring that the crankshaft turns exactly two revolutions for every complete single turn of the camshaft, which in turn opens and closes exhaust and intake valves. So if the timing belt isn’t working properly, nothing will.

If your car has been expelling a greater amount of smoke during operation than is typical, this could be a timing belt issue. An engine linked to an improperly functioning timing belt will have to work far harder than it should to maintain speed, resulting in a greater amount of exhaust.

It’s important to monitor your timing belt so that when it nears the end of its lifetime you are ready to change it, as opposed to having to deal with the problem when you’re forced to pull off the road. While it is possible to repair a faulty belt, replacing it is far better and repair should only be attempted as a last-ditch solution to get your car to a mechanic. Replacing a timing belt is a tricky endeavor best attempted by trained professionals, improper installation can permanently damage a vehicle.
