Let’s face it: your car battery is incredibly important but you probably only notice it when something goes wrong. With winter weather coming up soon, there’s nothing worse than getting into a frigid car and realizing that your car won’t start so it is a perfect time to think about replacing your car’s battery. In today’s blog, we offer some advice about how to find out whether your car battery needs to be replaced.
Signs That It’s Time to Say Hello to a New Car Battery
Do you know when the last time was that you replaced your car battery? Believe it or not, they generally have a lifespan of only about 3-4 years, so if it’s been longer than that (or if you purchased an older car and have no idea how old the battery is) then it may soon start giving you problems. Once you begin to notice that your battery is having trouble functioning correctly then think about how old it is. If it’s more than 4 years old then it’s probably time to call your Baltimore mechanic to get it replaced.
Sometimes the way you drive can have a big impact on your battery’s life. Trips of 15 minutes or less wear down your battery because they don’t give it time to fully charge so if you frequently make small trips, your battery may not last as long as it should. And if you have a habit of storing your car unused for long periods of time then your battery will likely lose its charge and need to be replaced.
As strange as it sounds, you should periodically remove your battery’s protective case and take a whiff. If it smells like rotten eggs then this is a surefire sign that it’s time to replace your battery.
Corrosion or staining
When you’re checking your battery’s scent, also be sure to give it a quick visual inspection to look for signs of corrosion or staining, particularly on the terminals. If you notice either, take your car in to be looked at by your trusted Baltimore mechanic.
