Car trouble can strike at the worst of times, leaving you stranded or in a stressful and sticky situation. However, with a little car know how, there are certain things you can watch out for and keep tabs on before they become nasty surprises, like your battery. Luckily, there are some tell-tale signs that will tell you when car battery needs replacement.

Engine Cranks But Will Not Start

If you engine cranks or turns over when you turn the key, showing a little life but not enough to get going, it’s very likely that your battery is either dead or well on its way there. In fact, a dead or dying car battery is the culprit in cases like this 94% of the time. Even when you use an ammeter to measure the current and it says the battery is good, it can still be just hair shy of not having the juice that your car needs to run.

No Crank, Start, or Lights

This is a pretty easy thing to diagnose. Your battery powers all of the accessories and lights in your car, so if none of these things are working, your car battery is the very first thing you should take a look at. However, this could also be a combination problem, perhaps including your alternator. If your car won’t crank or start but the headlights work, this may be indicative of a more serious mechanical issue.

Sometimes Your Car Starts, But Sometimes It Doesn’t

If your car starts inconsistently, it could mean several things for your car battery. Sometimes, it means that your battery terminals may have become loose, broken, calcified, or corroded. It is also possible that something within your car has malfunctioned and turns off and on at the wrong times, or a wire is touching something it shouldn’t be. Check your battery cables. It is easy to see if they have come loose and are causing problems yourself.

You Have To Keep Jump-Starting Your Car

Almost everyone has had to jump start their car at one point or another, however, this should not be a regular thing. If you are constantly jump starting your car, it is probably time to replace the battery. Think back, if you have had to jump your vehicle more than three times this week, it is definitely time to replace your battery. Even a new battery can become a dud if it’s been jumped too many times in a row.
