Should I Use Synthetic Oil in My Car?

Wondering whether you should use synthetic oil in your car? Will synthetic oil improve your car’s performance? Is it worth the extra money? The answers to these questions, and more, are in our blog.

Synthetic or conventional?

Synthetic Oil

What’s the difference between synthetic and conventional oil?

Conventional oil is refined from crude oil that’s pumped up from underground. Synthetic oil is made from chemical compounds. It can start as conventional oil that’s modified with chemicals, or it can be completely synthetic.

Performance comparison.

In terms of performance, the main difference between synthetic and conventional oil is that synthetic oil lasts longer. Conventional oil lasts between 3,000-5,000 miles, but synthetic lasts between 7,000-10,000 miles. Synthetic oil is also better at withstanding extreme temperatures.

In terms of things like fuel economy and engine performance, evidence is conflicting. Many manufacturers claim that synthetic oil will improve your vehicle’s performance and fuel economy, but it’s not clear that this is actually the case.

What are the benefits of using synthetic oil?

While it may or may not improve your vehicle’s performance, there are still several benefits to using synthetic oil.

For one thing, you’ll go longer between oil changes, meaning fewer trips to the mechanic and less money spent. And if you’re in a climate that sees extreme temperature changes, synthetic oil can stand up to them better than conventional.

Are there any drawbacks to using synthetic oil?

The main thing for many consumers is price. Synthetic oil is more expensive than conventional. And since you won’t have to visit the mechanic as much, you may miss a problem that may have been detected during a more frequent oil change schedule.

Should I use synthetic oil?

At the end of the day, the best thing to do is to use the type of oil recommended by the manufacturer for your vehicle. If this is synthetic, then go with that. But know that more important than the type of oil is getting the oil changed when it needs to be. Whether you use conventional or synthetic, as long as you get it changed regularly, you’ll be doing what you should be doing.
