Oil Change, Tire Inflation, and More: How to Effectively Prepare Your Vehicle for Storage

Oil Change, Tire Inflation, and More: How to Effectively Prepare Your Vehicle for Storage

Consider getting an oil change and following these tips to keep your car in good shape the next time you store it.

If you, like many others, are stuck in quarantine, you might not be using your car as much as usual. Nobody knows how long the COVID-19 pandemic will last, and you may end up storing your car for quite a while. Some folks have already had their cars sitting in garages for weeks. Unfortunately, seldom-used vehicles can run into a host of issues associated with long periods of storage. While you may not be storing your car for a terribly long time during the pandemic, it’s a good idea to keep these tips in mind for the next time you have to store a vehicle for weeks or months at a time. Consider getting an oil change and following these tips to keep your car in good shape while you store it during the quarantine.

Top Off Your Fluids and Get an Oil Change

One of the most important parts of keeping a car in storage is ensuring that all of the fluids are topped off and the tire pressure is appropriate beforehand. Preparation is key. Your mechanic may suggest topping off things like brake fluid, transmission fluid, coolant, power steering fluid, antifreeze, and windshield wiper fluid. Getting an oil change is a good idea, too. Some experts recommend filling your tank with gas if you will be storing your car for more than thirty days, as this can help keep moisture from building up in the tank. However, you should also consider adding a fuel stabilizer if you plan on storing your vehicle for more than a month or two since the shelf life of many fuels is about three months.

Keep Your Car Covered and Clean

Once you have performed all of the necessary preventative maintenance (and consulted your mechanic for tips), it is time to thoroughly wash, wax, and polish your car. You should keep your vehicle covered while it is being stored, whether it is in a garage or exposed to the elements. Select a cover that is fitted but allows airflow. This can prevent your vehicle from getting bumped, scratched, or otherwise damaged.
