Now’s a Good Time to Change Your Spark Plugs

The humble spark plug is one of the most important pieces of your engine! Learn more why spark plugs are important.

Regular car maintenance seems like a never ending job. This is because a modern engine is full of little parts that all need to function properly for the whole to work. You may be aware of most of the regular preventive maintenance that you get taken care of from time to time such as regular oil changes. But you probably don’t stop to think about the humble spark plug. Spark plugs are built to last for a while, but they do need to be replaced from time to time to ensure your engine continues running smoothly. And with the cold winter fast approaching, now is the perfect time to get them changed.

Why are Spark Plugs Important?

Spark plugs are usually ignored by the majority of drivers precisely because they are built to last for a while. Most manufacturers note that spark plugs don’t need maintenance until anywhere between 30,000 and 100,000 miles (for specially designed long life spark plugs). However, spark plugs age, and as the time passes more voltage is needed to function properly. Having fresh spark plugs prevents engine misfiring, which is when the engine halts for a second before going on as though nothing happened. Having worn out plugs can also contribute to engine surging and you may notice acceleration problems. If you have any of these signs, it might be a good idea to have your spark plugs changed.

Long-Term Effects

Worn-down spark plugs can contribute to many potentially costly problems down the line. Engine misfires can increase exhaust emission and harm your car’s fuel economy. You’ll notice an increase in the amount of cold starts that may happen during the winter months. Misfiring spark plugs can also let too much gasoline into the exhaust system. This could cause higher temperatures in the catalytic converter and may lead to a meltdown of the parts of the converter.

Don’t Wait Until It’s Too Late!

Although your car may feature what some call “life-long spark plugs” it is important to pay attention to the signs your car is giving. Problems can still occur and a vigilant car owner can recognize the warning symptoms of worn-down plugs. Having your spark plugs changed is a good way to keep your engine in top shape for the upcoming winter!
