New Latch Car Seat Guidelines are Coming

The Latch system, which stands for Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children, is a system that helps parents install child-safety seats correctly to ensure that their children will be safe and secured in their seats. However, new tests show that older children may be safer with the use of a seatbelt in addition to the top tether anchor of the Latch system.

The problem the testers encountered was that even though a car seat may be rated for children up to a certain weight, the seat itself adds to the total weight that the Latch system must bear. For older, heavier kids, the Latch system can fail if this combined weight is too much. In this situation using a seatbelt in combination with the Latch system can help prevent the system from failing.

To make the weight bearing potential of car seats more clear, new regulations next month. “All car seats manufactured after Feb. 27, 2014, will have a label that clearly defines the weight of the car seat and the maximum weight limit for installing that car seat with lower anchors.” So for example, if the car seat is rated for 60 pounds and the seat itself is weighs 15 pounds, children up to 45 pounds can use the seat safely with only the lower anchors of the Latch system. If the child is 50 pounds, then you should use the seatbelt in place of the lower anchors, in conjunction with the top tether anchors.
