Road trips are one of the great American summer pastimes. With such a large and beautiful country around us, it’s no wonder that people love to pile into a car and see a piece of it. However, if you are unprepared, that romantic jaunt on the road can quickly go sour. Here are some must-haves that will keep you prepared, comfy, and ready to take everything in as you travel.
A smartphone with a GPS app will do wonders for your road trip. While it can be fun to get a little lost, being lost for long periods of time is stressful and can throw your whole trip off track. If you are going to be going off road, up in the mountains, or to particularly out of the way places, you may also want to bring old-school paper maps. Some places are dead zones for phones and other tech devices, and there’s nothing like being caught in a dead zone with no map to make a road trip go sour.
Being prepared in the case of various common emergencies can take a lot of the stress out of an already stressful situation. Be sure to have a workable spare tire, set of jumper cables, and a jack before you head out. Also make sure you have any numbers on hand that might be useful for roadside assistance. It is probably a good idea to enroll in a roadside repair service before you leave if you haven’t already done so. Also, it may be useful to give a travel buddy a spare set of car keys in case you lock yours in the car or lose them when you are far from home.
Have Your Documents In Order
Make sure you have everything you need to be road-legal together before you travel. This includes your license, registration, and proof of insurance. If you will be driving internationally, make sure that you have your passport.
First Aid And Sun Protection
Make sure you have sunglasses and sunscreen. Even if you won’t be doing a lot of outdoor exploration, the sun that streams in through your car’s windows can lead to horrific sunburn when you spend hours and hours and even days exposed to it. Also make sure to have the first aid basics. These include ibuprofen, antacids, bug repellent, anti-itch cream, hand sanitizer, band aids, bandages, and antibiotic ointment.
