Learn how to drive safely in wet conditions.

We are at the beginning of fall, which means winter will be here before you know it.  The fall and winter months bring colder temperatures, as well as, an excess of snow and rain on the road.  When driving in wet and windy condition, you need to be alert and aware of all your surroundings.  According to AAA, wet roads contribute to 1.2 traffic crashes each year. If you want to avoid getting in an accident while it is rain or extremely windy, then you should follow these simple tips.

Say No To Cruise Control

When it comes to driving safely in inclement weather, you should avoid using cruise control.  Even though most modern cars come with the feature, you should only use when driving in dry conditions.  If you activate cruise control while it is raining, your car can lose traction causing you to lose control of your vehicle.  While driving in wet conditions, you want to have full control of your car. Being out of cruise control allows you to have more options in case you lose traction.

Slow It Down

If you want to stay as safe as possible while driving in rainy or windy condition, then you need to slow down and take your time.  Slowing your care down is the most effective way to prevent hydroplaning. In addition to going slow on the road, you want to avoid any sharps turns or hard braking.  You also want to leave plenty of space between you and the car ahead of you. You want to avoid driving right up on the rear of the vehicle in front of you.

Know How To Respond To Skidding

Even the safest drivers get in situations where their car skids while it is raining.  If you happen to feel your car skidding, you want to avoid hitting the brakes at all costs.  Slamming on the brakes will make your car go more out of control and increase your chances of getting in an accident.  If you feel your car skidding, you want to continue to look and steer in the direction you want the car to go.
