Is Your Car Overheating?

coolantWe are currently in the dead, sticky, popsicle-melting, scramble-an-egg-on-the-sidewalk portion of summer in the greater Maryland area. Whether you are a sun lover or a sun shunner, your car may be struggling to get through the intense August heat. As temperatures continue to rise, make sure that your car is able to keep cool and keep you safe all summer long. An engine running too hot can do major damage to your vehicle and potentially leave you stranded. Here are some ways to prevent your car from overheating this summer with car maintenance.

Have it Made in the Shade

When you are stuck walking outside for long distances in the summer heat, chances are that you wish for a nice shady spot to stop for a while. Your car has the same exact thoughts when it sits in a parking lot while you are at work or running errands. By parking your car in a shady spot, even if it means walking a little further, your car will enjoy a longer and healthier lifespan. If there isn’t any shade in your parking lot, use a simple sunshade to reduce heat and prevent overheating.

Check Your Engine Coolant

In hot months, before heating the engine up (never add coolant to a hot engine), check your coolant level. This is an easy way to perform car maintenance without driving into the shop. Open your car’s hood and locate the coolant reservoir using your owner’s guide if necessary. Examine the indicator lines on the reservoir to determine whether or not the level is too low, and add the appropriate amount of coolant if needed. Coolant is a vital way that your engine keeps itself from overheating; so don’t skip this step in the summer.

Time for a Power Up

How old is your car battery? If you aren’t sure of the answer or it’s been over three years, take your car into a trusted mechanic to have your battery tested. This preventative car maintenance will make sure that your vehicle is getting the power that it needs. The harder your car has to work, the hotter the engine is getting. The hotter the engine gets, the greater the chances are that your automobile will overheat.
