The Important Role of Your Cabin Air Filter

Cabin Air Filter

Your cabin air filter helps keep the air coming inside your vehicle fresh and clean.

When it comes to your list of regular vehicle maintenance, what comes to mind? Regular oil changes are probably at the top of everyone’s lists for good reason. You’d probably also think about your tires, oil filter, and engine air filter as integral maintenance tasks for the health of your vehicle. But have you ever thought about the cabin air filter? Were you even aware that such a part existed? A cabin air filter has a very important role to play in the operation of your vehicle, yet most people seem to forget about it during their regular maintenance stops. Today, we’re going to explain what a cabin air filter does and how often it should be replaced.

Stopping Pollutants

The cabin air filter is usually located behind the glove compartment or under the hood or dashboard of most vehicles. It is designed to filter the air that comes through your car’s heating and air conditioning system before it reaches the cabin. This helps prevents pollutants such as dust, pollen, smog, mold spores, and exhaust from entering the cabin and can help those with seasonal allergies breathe a little easier when they go out driving. In addition to improving air quality in the cabin, changing the cabin air filter can help prevent a more serious repair of your HVAC system. When the air is dirty, the air conditioning system has to work harder, thus putting unnecessary strain on it.

When the Cabin Air Filter Needs to Be Replaced

Your vehicle’s manual will have more information on factory recommendations for getting this important but oft-neglected filter replaced. In general, mechanics recommend having the cabin air filter replaced about every 15,000 to 30,000 miles or once a year. While this could be a do-it-yourself project, we highly recommend leaving the job to a professional mechanic. Some cabin air filters are located behind the glove compartment, which then entails removing the entire glove box to replace the air filter. If you want to have your cabin air filter replaced in time for the upcoming spring pollen season, but aren’t sure how to do it yourself, contact your professional mechanic to have them replace it!
