Over time, the headlights on your car have probably dulled from their original transparent luster to a more translucent fog. This can reduce the amount of light that is projected onto the road from the bulbs in your headlights, and it also may be an aesthetic concern for some. Fortunately, it’s not necessary to completely replace the plastic headlight coverings. You can purchase a headlight restoration kit and do the job yourself in about an hour.
How to Restore Dull Headlights
To restore dull headlights in your vehicle, you’ll need a headlight restoration kit, which you can get from your local auto parts shop. You’ll also need latex gloves to protect your hands (or a substitute if you’re allergic to latex), electrician’s tape, a sponge, newspapers, and water.
- Use the electrical tape to tape off the lights so you don’t get any of the headlight restorer (which is abrasive) on the car’s paint. You might also want to tape on some newspaper around the lights for extra protection.
- Use the headlight repair kit as directed to clean your headlights. What the kit actually does is use an abrasive compound to level out the oxidation and small dings that have occurred from road debris, much in the same way you use sandpaper to smooth a surface. The kit may come with a buffing wheel, but if it doesn’t you can use a sponge. Make sure to wear gloves during this process so you don’t get any of the compound on your hands.
- Once you’re finished, remove the tape, and enjoy your newly clear headlights!
