How to Prepare Your Car for an Emissions Test

It’s inevitable that you have to deal with an emissions test as a car owner, but things can go much more smoothly when you are properly prepared.

An emissions test is important because it helps to keep air clean and makes sure your car is in the right shape to reduce pollution. Let’s review how you can prepare for an emissions test.

How can you get your car ready for an emissions test?

Warm Engines

Car engines tend to heavily pollute when the engine is cold or just warming up, so make sure your engine is warm when your car is ready for testing. Clean-air components like a catalytic converter won’t work properly until it has warmed up, so it’s recommended that you drive your car around for at least 15 minutes before having it tested. You don’t want to completely shut off your car before it is tested so let it idle.

Engine Checks

When you see that little yellow light that tells you to check your engine don’t ignore it. The problem could be something as simple as the fuel cap being loose, but your car could have more serious performance issues if the check engine light remains. A mechanic can quickly diagnosis any issues that would cause your car to fail an emission test, so it will pay off in the long run to have it checked out sooner rather than later. There may just be a quick fix needed, and you certainly do not want to do with the hassle of failing the test.

Execute a Quick Tune Up

There are several little tips that you can use to help you pass an emissions test. You should check your air filter, spark plugs, spark plug wires and PCV valve to see if anything needs cleaning. If any of these items are not working properly, your car’s ability to burn the fuel charge effectively will be lagging. This can cause your car to fail an emissions test.
