How to Prepare Your Car for a Road Trip

DIY

First, here are a few do-it-yourself tips.

Check the lights.

Make sure the brake lights, taillights, headlights, and turning signals are all in good working order. You don’t want to get stopped for a broken taillight!

Check the tires.

Check the tire pressure of all the tires and make sure they’re properly inflated. You should also take a look at the tire tread while you’re at it. If the tread is wearing thin, you might want to replace the tire(s) before your road trip.

Wash your car.

Any time is a good time to give your car a good rinse.

Pack an emergency kit.

If you don’t already have an emergency kit in your car, pack one before your trip. This kit should include things like a basic first aid kit, flashlight, tools, and a map. Make sure to bring your car charger for your phone, jumper cables, and a spare tire/tire changing kit as well.

Check the levels of your fluids.

Check the levels of the oil, brake fluid, transmission fluid, coolant, and windshield fluid. If any are low, top them off before you go. Remember that just adding oil isn’t the same as an oil change, because adding oil doesn’t remove sludge that has built up. Check your air filter too.
