How to Perform a Tire Inspection

How to Perform a Tire Inspection

You should inspect your tires regularly so you know right away if there are any problems!

When it comes to road safety, maintenance is key. It’s important for drivers to regularly check and inspect their car for necessary upkeep, including oil changes, brake replacements, and new tires. With the hectic nature of day-to-day life, it can be difficult to get to your mechanic and make sure that your car is in good shape. Luckily, there are some easy inspections you can do yourself to figure out when it’s the right time to take your car to the mechanic. For example, you can inspect your tires right at home to figure out how worn they are and when they’ll need to be replaced. Here are our tips on how to perform a tire inspection.

Tread Depth

The first step in inspecting your tires is checking the tread depth. This is an excellent indicator of how worn your tires are. When your treads are in good shape, they allow you to grip the road well and drive your vehicle as safely as possible. The penny test is a great way to tell if your tires have enough grip: place a penny upside down in your tire tread. If you can see the top of Abe Lincoln’s head, your tires have worn and it may be time to get some replacements.

Check the Tire Pressure

Tire pressure gauges are available for use at the tire inflation stations at most gas stations. Just remove the valve stem cap, press the gauge into the stem, and use enough pressure that the hissing sound stops. Compare this readout to your vehicle’s recommended tire pressure to decide how deflated your tires are. Worn out tires may deflate more quickly and often than newer, sturdier tires.

Condition and Age

How long have you been using your tires? How worn out do they look to the naked eye? Condition and age are good indicators that your tires may need replacing soon. Look for scrapes, punctures, and cracks along your tires–these can tell you if you’re at risk of a flat tire in the near future. Be sure to replace your tires regularly to avoid road hazards and damage to your vehicle.
