Your headlights are an incredibly important safety feature. They not only allow you to more clearly see the road in front of you but they also alert other traffic to your presence. Over time, headlights can get dull and the casings become dingy and dirty, leaving your headlights less bright and much less effective than they were when they were new. Luckily, this is a quick and easy fix that you can do yourself! Read on to learn how to brighten up dull and dingy headlights.
How to Brighten Up Dull Headlights From Your Baltimore Mechanic
Restoring your dingy headlights back to their original luster is an easy job that should take less than an hour. All you need are a few simple supplies and a little bit of time. You’ll need to purchase a headlight restoration kit from your local auto repair shop, latex glove, a sponge, electrical tape, newspaper, and water.
Begin by taping off the area around your headlights so that you don’t accidentally get the solution anywhere other than your headlights. The solution is very abrasive so it’s important to keep it away from your car’s paint. You can also tape newspaper around the area if you would like to be extra cautious.
Next, read the manufacturer’s directions to use your headlight repair kit. The kit includes an abrasive compound which levels the surface of your headlights, essentially sanding it down to a smooth finish so that you will be left with a clear and transluscent result. Your kit may include a buffing wheel but if it does not then an ordinary sponge will do just fine. Be sure to wear gloves throughout this entire process as the abrasive compound can cause serious damage to your skin.
Once you have adequately buffed your headlights, all you have to do it wipe away the excess solution, remove the tape (and newspaper if you used it), and voila! Beautiful, good-as-new headlights.
