How Do I Know If My Car Has Been Recalled?

With all the recent vehicle recalls in the news recently, you might be concerned about whether or not your vehicle has been recalled at some point. Fortunately, it’s very easy to find out if your car has been recalled. These are some resources you can use:

Vehicle Recall Resources

  1. http://www.recalls.gov/nhtsa.html – This site allows you to search recalls by several categories including motor vehicle recalls, child safety seat recalls, motor vehicle equipment recalls, tire recalls, and monthly recall reports.
  2. http://www.cudlautosmart.com/Research/RecallsTSBs.aspx – Easy recall resource. Select your vehicle’s year, make, model, and style, and find out if it has been recalled.
  3. http://www.consumerreports.org/cro/cars/repair/car-recalls/index.htm – This site also makes it easy to determine if your vehicle has been recalled. It also has a feed of recent recalls and affected models.

How Do Vehicle Recalls Work?

There are basically two processes by which a vehicle can be recalled. The first is if it’s a manufacturer-initiated recall. The manufacturer finds that there is a safety defect in one of its vehicles and issues a recall. The other way a recall can be issued is by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The NHTSA may receive concerns from vehicle owners about a safety issue. If this issue comes up enough, the NHTSA initiates a process by which it determines whether or not the issue is a legitimate concern, and whether or not a recall should be issued.

Once a recall is issued, the manufacturer is required by law to notify all owners of the vehicle being recalled by mail. The manufacturer is also required to provide a remedy to the problem without charge to the owner, as long as the vehicle is no more than 10 years old at the time of the recall. So for example, for a recall issued on a certain model in 2014, owners of that model dating back to 2004 would be able to have it fixed for free. Owners of 2003 and earlier models would have to pay to get their vehicle fixed.

It’s important to pay attention to the latest recalls, because they could include your vehicle. It’s especially important if you’re the owner of a used vehicle which has changed hands, because you may not receive a notification from the manufacturer about the recall.
