4 Tips For Driving Safely During Summer Thunderstorms

With these four safe-driving tips, you’ll be better prepared for those surprise summer thunderstorms.

Summer is full of sunshine and blue skies, but that’s not the only kind of summer weather that we experience. Marylanders also have to deal with severe summer thunderstorms that can seemingly come out of nowhere. With these four safe-driving tips, you’ll be better prepared for those surprise summer thunderstorms.

Consider Potential Danger

The first thing you should consider is whether or not you really need to drive. Thunderstorms can be unpredictable in many ways, and if you’re someone who is easily intimidated by driving in severe conditions, then it’s best to wait out a thunderstorm. What could start as a light drizzle could turn into a huge deluge of rain or even hail. Don’t push yourself to drive if it’s not absolutely necessary. Sometimes, the best choice is to wait until it blows over.

Use Your Seatbelt

It’s probably something you do without thinking, but wearing your seatbelt in severe weather is a must. Even if you’re calm, cool, and collected while driving in extreme conditions, other drivers on the road may not be. This is why wearing your seatbelt is a necessity. You never know how others will react to a storm, so be sure to protect yourself and everyone else in your car.

Stay Alert

While driving, it’s best that you remain extremely alert and aware of your surroundings. Put your phone away to avoid looking at it while driving. Avoid listening to music. If you can tune into a local radio station that gives weather updates, that should be the only thing you’re listening to. Avoid all distractions and stay focused on the road.

Use Your Headlights And Wipers

Your headlights and windshield wipers are very important during a thunderstorm. Be sure that all of your car’s lights (especially your headlights) are working properly. Even in the middle of the day, a storm can roll in, making the road hard to see. Combine that darkness with heavy sheets of rain, and you’ll need your headlights and wipers to be in tip-top shape. If you have any issues, be sure to take your car into a local auto mechanic as soon as possible.
