Brake Service Basics: Why Your Brake Light Might Be On

Brake Service Basics: Why Your Brake Light Might Be On

If your brake light is on, it is likely one of these reasons, and you may need to make an appointment to have your car in for brake service as soon as possible.

One of the most fundamentally essential components of a car is the brake system. This, possibly more than any other part of a car, needs to be adequately maintained so that it is always in good working order. If you’ve noticed your brake light on, this is never something that can be safely ignored. Brakes that fail can be devastating and deadly. If your brake light is on, it is likely one of these reasons, and you may need to make an appointment to have your car in for brake service as soon as possible.

Parking Brake

The parking brake light is potentially the easiest brake light issue to fix. This light is usually a red or yellow circle with either an exclamation mark (!) or a “P” inside it. Some vehicles may have the word “BRAKE” lit up in red or yellow in place of a symbol. Simply put, when the parking brake is engaged, the light is on. When it is released, the light goes off. If the light doesn’t go off when you release the parking brake, either the brake is still partially engaged or some other issue needs to be addressed. You should not drive with the parking brake engaged – it will wear out your pads and rotors.

Brake Fluid

The circle with the exclamation mark (!) is not always the parking brake and may instead be the brake service light. Often, that symbol is tied to the brake fluid level. When it shows up solid red or yellow, it usually means that the fluid is getting low. When it shows up blinking red or yellow, that means you have an issue that needs immediate attention – flashing red can indicate that you have almost no brake fluid left. These issues need to be addressed quickly or your entire brake system could fail.

ABS Issue

If your brake issue is with the anti-lock brake system, the warning light should say “ABS.” When this comes on, you need to schedule a visit to the mechanic. There are many things in the ABS that could trigger the light, but the only way to know if it is a severe issue is to have a professional check it out.
