Brake Service: Basic Parts and Concerns

Brake Service: Basic Parts and Concerns

In this week’s blog, we discuss a few of the basic parts of your car’s brakes and common concerns that will help you be more informed when it comes to your next brake service.

For those of us who are not incredibly well-versed in automotive maintenance, brake service can be confusing. Many of us know about brake pads, but there are all sorts of parts involved, including rotors, hoses, and other things that do not sound like they belong in a vehicle’s brakes. In this week’s blog, we will go over a few of the basic parts of your car’s brakes and common concerns that will help you be more informed when it comes to your next brake service.

Basic Parts: Calipers, Pads, and More

It can be challenging to visualize how brakes work if you are unfamiliar with the system. Aside from your car’s brake pads (also called “shoes”), which are typically visible and help your car stop by gripping the wheels, many car owners do not know a whole lot about the parts involved in brake service and maintenance. The parts that your brake pads apply friction to are called “rotors” or “drums,” and they are attached to each wheel. Calipers are the parts that apply pressure to the brake pads, causing them to engage. Your calipers are activated by brake fluid that flows within your brake lines (also called a “brake hose”). This fluid is critical in a functioning brake system, and any leaks within the brake lines can cause a loss of pressure that makes the whole system ineffective.

Common Brake Service Concerns

When bringing your vehicle in for brake service, there are a few things that your mechanic will likely look at in addition to your stated concern. Brake fluid levels and quality can indicate a leak in your lines, and your mechanic may recommend a brake line flush and fluid replacement. Another common issue is worn brake pads or rotors. Your mechanic will look at your pads and rotors to see if they are worn to an unsafe point. If so, they will likely recommend replacement. Aside from these common issues, many different problems can occur within your vehicle’s brake system.
