Baltimore Auto Repair Tips: Car Damage to Look For After a Flood

flood damage

After these heavy rains, it’s important to look for signs of flood damage in your car.

The East Coast has seen a huge amount of rain this spring, and, unfortunately, the Baltimore area was no exception. With heavy rains leading to flash floods, cars in certain parts of the state were devastated while some endured mild water damage. After these heavy rains, it’s important to look for signs of flood damage in your car. Here’s what to look for if your car was affected by any flooding this spring.

Musty Mildew Odor

One of the most obvious symptoms of a flood-damaged car is the musty mildew smell that is left even after all of the water evaporates. It is an undeniable moldy smell. Think damp basement or wet earth smells. If your car smells at all like this, it means that water was in your car for some time. This smell can be hard to remove, but with the correct cleaning solutions, you may be able to alleviate some of the strong scents left behind by water.

Wet Mats

Once inside your car, you may notice that the mats are damp. This is not a good sign, as it could mean water levels were so high that water covered the entire floor of your car. Mats can be removed and cleaned easily, and you can have your carpets shampooed. This should, hopefully, help get rid of the moldy smell within the mats themselves. After shampooing your carpets, be sure they are fully dried before putting them back in your car.

Engine Issues

Your most significant concern is your car’s engine after severe flooding. Open up your hood, and look for murky transmission fluid and diluted engine oil. If you own a newer car, the electronic computer system in your car may have been damaged as well. If you’re unsure what to look for, take your car to a local auto expert as soon as you possibly can to make sure your car is safe to drive.

Rust Spots

Another problematic symptom of flood damage is rust. These may develop over time, so it’s best to keep a close eye on the exterior of your car as well. If any part of your car looks damaged after flooding, a trusted Baltimore mechanic can help.
