Your Baltimore Auto Repair Shop Explains When Your Vehicle Needs a Tire Rotation

Tire Rotation

A tire rotation extends the life of your tires and allows mechanics to get a closer look at the undercarriage and brakes of your vehicle.

The Baltimore auto repair experts here at Auto Stop understand how rough the roads of Baltimore can be on your tires during the summer. As part of your vehicle’s regularly scheduled maintenance needs, you should expect to have a tire rotation performed every 7,000 miles or so. Tire rotations are important in order to get the longest possible service life out of your tires. They also allow mechanics to take an unimpeded look at your brakes and undercarriage to discover any other important problems that may be lurking. How can you tell when your vehicle needs a tire rotation? Here are some signs to watch out for.

Uneven Tire Wear

This is the most common sign that will clue you in to the need for a tire rotation. Check the tread depths at multiple points on your tire every so often using a penny. If the tread depths are radically different, that means your tires are wearing unevenly and this needs to be addressed. Also, feel the tread for signs of feathering – if the treads feel rounded and smooth on one end, but sharp and edged on the other, your vehicle will need to be taken in to have the tires rotated properly, and potentially have related mechanical or alignment problems fixed as well.

Uneven Front to Rear Wear

Tires can wear unevenly depending on whether they are on the front axle or the rear axle. To prolong the service life of all four of your tires, it’s important to rotate them and even out the wear amongst them. Different tread wear patterns can also clue in a mechanic towards other potential problems your vehicle might be suffering.

Noise and Vibrations

Your tires are meant to make your drive as smooth as possible, but when tires wear unevenly it can lead to increased road noise and vibrations. These vibrations are usually the most pronounced in the steering wheel, though you may feel them in other parts of the car as well.  If this is the case, don’t wait until your next oil change to have it looked at – take care of it now!
