Unfortunately, we live in a world where there are many honest auto repair shops and many dishonest auto care scams that give us a bad name. Did you know that auto repair problems actually make up the largest category of consumer complaints? Every year, Americans lose tens of billions of dollars thanks to poor car repairs or unnecessary maintenance. How can you determine whether or not you are falling victim to an auto care scam?
Many people at the gas station as just trying to mind their own business, but others are trying to scam you! These people will do damage to your car while you are stopped at a gas station and try to convince you that you need repairs on the spot. Some people will drip oil underneath vehicles to make it seem like they were leaking, which is relatively harmless, but others will put nails in tires or cut water hoses to do major damage. These “helpers” will then offer to perform the repairs themselves for high prices and emphasize how much danger you could be in if you don’t accept their help right then and there.
Another common auto care scam is offering verbal estimates and no proof to consumers what deal they were offered. An auto shop will call a consumer or speak with them when the vehicle is initially dropped off to make a totally reasonable estimate for the cost of repair. Then, when the customer goes to actually pick up their vehicle, they find that the final bill is significantly higher. Some customers are tricked into paying more, since they assume that the shop found more problems with their vehicle. Unfortunately, this is a dangerous practice that can scam people out of a great deal of money.
This common auto care scam is intentionally dishonest, as auto repair shops will ask customers to come in for very inexpensive maintenance services, like oil changes. They use these special deals to get customers to bring their vehicles in. Once the vehicle arrives in the shop, the customer finds that there are numerous repairs that urgently need to be completed. Sometimes, there is nothing wrong with the car and the shop will simply bill for services never performed. Other times, they will intentionally cause damage to show proof that repairs needed to be made.
