Automatic Transmission Problems to Watch Out For

Do you drive a vehicle with an automatic transmission? Most people do, but few people know how to recognize the signs of a transmission problem. That’s why in this week’s blog, we’re going to talk about some of the most common signs of a problem with an automatic transmission.

Automatic Transmission Problems to Watch Out For

A Delayed Engagement

Do you notice that when you shift from park into drive that it takes a few seconds before the car starts to move forward and you can actually accelerate? This means it’s taking longer than it should be for transmission to kick in.

Slipping Transmission

Slipping is what we call the phenomenon of the gear changing for no reason. You might be driving along at a steady speed when the gear shifts out of nowhere. You might also hear a noise from the engine like a whining sound that changes pitch.

Another symptom of a slipping transmission is when you have trouble accelerating, or the vehicle feels underpowered.

Trouble Shifting Gears

You have a good feel for when your transmission is going to shift from one gear to the next. So you’ll probably recognize when it’s not shifting like it usually does. The shift might be not be smooth, or the transmission might hesitate before it shifts. This could be accompanied by a perceived decrease in power, or a clunking or thudding sound.

Leaking Transmission Fluid

Leaking transmission fluid is definitely a sign of a transmission problem. Transmission fluid is bright red when it’s new, and turns into a dark red/reddish brown over time. If you notice a fluid of this color leaking from the vehicle, take it to your local auto repair shop as soon as possible.

Check Engine Light

Check engine lights usually don’t signify a transmission problem, but it is a possibility. If the check engine light comes on, and you’re experience one or more of the problems listed above, take your car to your local auto repair shop to get it checked out.
