7 Ways to Keep Your Car Cool This Summer

7 Ways to Keep Your Car Cool This Summer

Protect your car from the bright summer sun.

This summer is really heating up here in Baltimore. For most people, getting into a super-hot car that has been sitting in the heat and sun can be torture. So how do you keep your car from getting unpleasantly hot in the summer? These tips should help you out.

Use a Window Shade

Probably one of the easiest options is to just use a window shade. They just sit in your window and block out the hot sun. For added protection if your car is going to remain in the sun for an extended period of time, you can put one in the back window as well.

Cover Up Your Dashboard

The sun can cause the vinyl of your dashboard to crack and fade. You can prevent this by using a fabric dash cover.

Put a Hand Towel Over the Steering Wheel

Even if you have already put up a sun shade, you should still toss a small towel over your steering wheel to keep it cool. It can be awfully difficult to drive if you feel like you can’t touch the steering wheel.

Park in the Shade

If there are trees nearby, or an awning of some sort, you can park under those. If none of these are available, you can always park in the shadow of a building. If you have to walk a little further, it will be worth it to have a slightly cooler car after spending time in air conditioning.

Keep Your Valuables Out of the Sun

If you use CDs in your car, be sure to keep discs and disc holders out of the direct sunlight. It’s a good idea to store these items under the seat or in the glove compartment. If you don’t really have a place out of the sun where you can keep heat-sensitive items, consider keeping them in the trunk to protect them.

Find a Garage Whenever Possible

It’s not always possible to park in a garage, but whenever it is feasible, it is a great way to keep your car a little cooler. Even if the garage is warm, it’s still not as hot as being out in the sun for a long period of time.

Leave Windows Slightly Ajar

It’s not a good idea to leave your windows all the way open, but it can be helpful to leave them cracked slightly. Make sure they aren’t open enough that you can fit your arm in, but just enough to let some air in. Even a small crack will let some air flow through.
