5 Car Maintenance Tips to Help Your Car Last Longer

Change the oil and filter regularly.

Oil is the lifeblood of your engine. It keeps moving parts lubricated and draws heat away from the engine. Make sure to check your oil once a week to make sure there’s enough oil in the engine, and make sure to change it when the oil is old. This is a simple task that will add many miles to your engine’s life.

Flush the coolant annually.

The coolant system keeps your engine from overheating. Once a year, you should flush the system and put in new coolant. Go with a 50/50 mix of coolant and distilled water to prevent buildup of deposits and corrosion in the system.

Check other fluids regularly.

Other fluids such as transmission fluid and brake fluid don’t need to be changed as regularly as other fluids, but you should still check them regularly to ensure they’re at the appropriate levels. These fluids shouldn’t be running out. If they are, it means there’s a leak somewhere that needs to be fixed. Brake fluid in particular is important to check on, because it’s hydroscopic, which means it attracts water. Water can corrode metal components, so it’s a good idea to replace the brake fluid annually.

Make sure moving parts are lubricated.

Oil is for engine lubrication, but there are plenty of other moving parts such as bearings and joints that need to be lubricated to keep them working. Bring your car in to your Baltimore auto repair shop to get everything lubricated.

Keep it clean inside and out.

Keeping the outside of the car clean will keep the paint job in good shape. Also, make sure to wash the underside to clean off dirt that can accumulate there from the road. A coat of sealer for the undercarriage and wax for the paint will provide the protection you want for the exterior.

Keep the interior clean to prevent any staining of the upholstery. Also park the car in the shade and use a window deflector screen to keep the plastic and vinyl components inside from drying out.
