4 Easy Road Trips for Your Memorial Day Weekend

Whether you live in or around Baltimore but you’re looking for a fun trip, or you’ve got family coming into town and you want to show them around, there are plenty of places that are a quick and easy drive from the city.

The unofficial start of summer is finally here: Memorial Weekend! And there is no better time to plan a fun and exciting road trip. Whether you live in or around Baltimore but you’re looking for a fun trip, or you’ve got family coming into town and you want to show them around, there are plenty of places that are a quick and easy drive from the city.

Eastern Shore

Maryland’s Eastern Shore is the area of the state that is on the east side of the Chesapeake Bay, and it is full of dozens of quaint little towns and natural areas to explore. One such area is Chesapeake City which has a restored historic district full of great shops and a museum. The trip is about 70 miles from the city and does require driving across the Bay Bridge. If you travel further east, you’ll eventually get to Ocean City (which is a great getaway once school is out too) and Assateague Island, where the wild ponies are.

Deep Creek Lake

Traveling in the exact opposite direction, you’ll find Deep Creek Lake on the western end of the state. Deep Creek is the largest inland body of water in Maryland, with over 68 miles of shoreline. The manmade lake is a great place for water sports and activities, especially in the heat of summer. At 179 miles from the city, it is a bit of a drive, but the beauty and fun are worth it for an unforgettable weekend getaway.

Shenandoah National Park

About 160 miles from the city you will find the unparalleled beauty of one of the country’s great national parks. The Blue Ridge Mountains offer stunning views all year long, from a sea of wildflowers in the spring to colorful foliage in the fall. There are opportunities to hike, or you could simply drive along Skyline Drive and take in the sights. While you’re in the area, Luray Caverns is a spectacular natural wonder, offering a maze of caverns with stunning stalactites and stalagmites.

Swallow Falls

Swallow Falls State Park is a beautiful natural preserve about 195 miles from Baltimore. It is the location of the state’s highest free-falling waterfall, Muddy Creek Falls. There is a beautiful trail about 1.25 miles long that you can hike to enjoy the beauty of the river and the falls up close, as well as playgrounds, picnic areas, and even campsites.
