3 Auto Maintenance Tips to Help Extend the Life of Your Car Battery

Read this blog to discover three auto maintenance tips to help extend the life of your car battery.

Car batteries are often familiar to even the most inexperienced drivers. Many folks know how to jumpstart their car, but how many know how to take care of their car battery’s long-term health? Believe it or not, batteries can actually benefit greatly from regular maintenance. Read this blog to discover three auto maintenance tips to help extend the life of your car battery.

1. Clean Your Battery Terminals

One way to help extend the life of your car battery is to clean the terminals regularly as part of your auto maintenance routine. Over time, battery terminals corrode. This is caused by liquid in the battery evaporating and mixing with metal and oxygen. You can clean your battery terminals with a mixture of baking soda and water. Wear eye protection, gloves, and old clothing. The corrosion is acidic, and you should avoid contact with it. Remove the cables connected to your battery, clean the terminals, and flush the area with water to prevent corrosion in other areas. Your mechanic can apply a few different protectants to slow down future corrosion, but this is an extremely common issue with batteries.

2. Check Your Connections

Checking your connections is particularly crucial if you frequently drive on bumpy roads or streets with potholes. Rough terrain can cause your wire connections to loosen or worse, the bracket holding your car battery in place could become dislodged. If your battery is not firmly fastened to its cables and bracket, it could experience short-circuits and internal damage.

3. Turn Off Lights and Electronics When the Engine is Off

Most drivers know that they should avoid leaving their car’s lights on when they are not in it. Forgetting to turn your lights off before you exit the vehicle can drain your battery, leaving you stranded when you try to start the car up again. Depending on the model and year of your vehicle, leaving phone chargers plugged into your car’s USB ports or auxiliary outlet can drain the battery as well. These chargers can draw power even when they are not plugged into a phone, so be sure to remove them from your car’s outlets when the engine is off.
